I understand that it has never been about works. I understand that my salvation can never be earned and that nothing I do could ever earn my way into heaven. I often wish it was and it would hold people accountable to doing more good than bad. In my mind I think every action should have a sliding scale between -100 to 100 and at the end of your life you better have a positive number or you’re not living with Jesus in heaven. But it isn’t that way. The only way to God is to believe that Jesus came to earth, led a sinless life, and died for your salvation.
So I stumble upon this verse and realize that hard work is essential for my walk. This verse says that I must work hard for two reasons and neither is Salvation.
First I must work hard to prove that I really are God’s people. I have heard it many ways but I think a child’s Christian song says it best, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.” Of course this is the Light of Jesus and when you see the bible verse found in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” In a since it is a recruiting tool. How many times have I heard people say, because of laziness or being a jerk, “Stupid Christians!” Sometimes having a Jesus symbol on the back of my car is scary, by that mark I have to drive better. I am representing Jesus and I don’t want others to lump me in with all Christians when I mess up.
The second part, “Do these things, and you will never fall away.” That is exactly the advice of my Grandmother. She use to say, “Idol hands are the Devil’s workshop.” And she is right, whenever I have nothing to do, I start getting into trouble, and it usually ends with guilt, stress and repentance, not a good way to end a day. I would rather make my Father proud and just do what He tells me. Thanks Grandma.
So work hard, because you need to prove that God has called you, and it will keep you from doing evil. Work hard, do the things you need to do, then do the things you should do. Prioritize your time, and when people are impressed, say “Thanks” and then give credit to God. Let them know you are His people.
Lord, thank you for your wise words. They teach me so much. They help mold and guide me and I am entirely grateful. Please help me apply these words to my actions and show Your light. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
