Your love never fails.

"You, Lord, will always treat me with kindness. Your love never fails. You have made us what we are. Don’t give up on us now!" Psalm 138:8

I see four individual parts to this verse. Four separate thoughts that can stand on their own and provide us some insight to what David is trying to say to God. I am going to look at each one of these parts ending with the second part and most important section of this verse.

The first part, “You, Lord, will always treat me with kindness.” address God like a letter, like a prayer and admitting that no matter what happens to us on earth that God does treat us with kindness. Friendly, generous, and considerate help sum up what kindness is and with all those qualities we get an image of how approachable God is. I know people have heard the fire and brimstone sermons but if I can tell you, God is amazing at his kindness and very approachable and forgiving.

The third part, “You have made us what we are.” He has made us so amazingly, unique creatures here on earth that all have a purpose. He has also added one common ingredient to our DNA that we all share, Free Will. Our job is to find our purpose, and then apply our unique skill to carry out that purpose.

The forth part, “Don’t give up on us now!” I think should have started with a please because it is a request of something from God. I know I would have added please to show my awe and respect and asked not demanded. But with that saying, God doesn’t give up on us, and I think God likes hearing us ask for that. I think it makes God smile when we ask that, because it is admitting to Him that we need another chance.

Then the second and most important part, “Your love never fails” Never is a strong word, “at no time in the past or future; on no occasion; not ever.” is how Never is defined by Webster and of course you can take that to the bank. God is love plain and simple. He is the standard at which we measure love and that awesome love is never ending.

My prayer is,
Lord I am amazed by how much you love us. I am amazed at how kind you are to me. I beg of you not to give up on me, not to give up on this nation, not to give up on our church, my family, my neighborhood, and the whole of mankind. I pray that I can love like you do, not to my friends, but to all I encounter. Thank you for the promises that you sprinkle throughout the bible for me to read. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
