How many people remember the infamous childhood phrase "Sticks
and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me...?" I know I
have said it numerous times and at times heard it directed at me. Ironically
thought, it was usually said after hurtful words were delivered as a comeback so
as not to show your hurt feelings.
We don’t often use that phrase anymore as adults but the concept
still remains. How many times have we spoken words that have hurt others,
simply because we have not thought about what we are saying?
I will be the first to admit, shamefully, that I am guilty
in this area. I get so worked up on my emotions and I say things so quickly
that I don’t think before I say them. Sometimes they are not even directed at
someone specifically, or what I am upset or stressed about doesn't even include
that person, but I let my emotions get the best of me and out of my mouth comes words of disrespect, anger,
frustration, bitterness, attitude, etc… any of which can cause the people
around me to be hurt by them. Afterwards, I try to take the words back, but the
damage has already been done. And more often than not sadly, it is the ones
closest to us that get hurt the most. We tend to let our guards down and think
less of what we will say when we are with those that love us already.
We have all heard the expression “think before you speak”,
but there is also an acronym to the word “THINK” on how to determine if what
you are about to say should be said. I have shared the picture of it below. You
might have seen it on Facebook or Pintrest and thought at the time what a cool
idea, but like me, quickly forgot about it. I hope this time, I don’t.
In James 3, the tongue is compared to the small rudder that
steers a massive ship and it is true. Even though it seems small, our words
steer our lives and what we choose to say effects us and those around us. We
are commanded in John 13:34 to love one another and be Christlike in the way we
live. Our words should reflect that of Jesus, filled with love, support and
encouragement, rather than frustration, bitterness and anger. As Psalm 19:14 says, the words of our mouths should be pleasing unto God. We are meant to
build people up and show them the way to God, not tear them down and push them
away.
Please forgive me Lord, my desire is to live for You but my
words don’t always reflect that. I pray that You would watch over my tongue and
guide my thoughts, actions and words. Help me to think before I speak so that my
words would bring glory to You and shower those around me with Your love. I ask this in Your holy and precious name, Amen.
